Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

Welcome! Every student who enters our classroom has the right to learn just as every teacher has the right to teach in an environment that is safe, suitable to learning, and free from any distractions. In order to maintain these rights, everyone should be aware of the responsibilities and expectations designed to help you continue to be hard working and dedicated students. By getting to know each student, I will help you discover your full potential by providing a rigorous curriculum of the Math Standards. For those students who master the core concepts easily, extra opportunities to have “Fun with Numbers” will guide students to a deeper understanding of core concepts as they relate to middle school math standards. These extra credit options are only available once the Math 7 – 2 core standards are mastered.

This curriculum is based on the California State Mathematics Standards for middle school.

·  Be on time! Bring all supplies each day. Be in your seats and working when the bell rings!

·  Pay attention to the speaker and always raise your hand before participating!

·  ASK QUESTIONS! There are NO dumb questions! Without this mastery will not occur!

·  Be enthusiastic & cooperative and respectful toward each other! Give your best effort!

ABSENCES:  All work must be made up before returning to class. Math is sequential and the EastLake Math Department does an excellent job in allocating the time needed to master the concepts. Be diligent! If you know you will be absent, get your work ahead of time, or link to www.schoolnotes.com.

MAINTAIN GREAT BEHAVIOR!  Disrupting the class and disrespect to fellow human beings is not permitted. Remember, your job is to learn middle school math so you can pass the high school exit exam.

HALL PASS:  Class time is extremely important. Hall passes are for emergencies only. Time spent outside the classroom will be made up at nutrition break. Take care of your personal needs between classes. If you have a medical condition requiring that you use the restroom frequently, please provide a doctors note so we can plan for your comfort and minimize disruptions.

GRADING: Your grade will include points from the following areas: NEVER throw anything away!!!

QUIZZES: 65% - A parent or guardian signs quizzes or tests which must be returned the following day.

HOMEWORK:  25% Always clarify instructions, if you need to, BEFORE you leave for the day!!!

END OF COURSE EXAM:  10% for the district End of Course Exam (EOC)

CITIZENSHIP:  Monitored daily. Please follow the Triton Standards for Behavior in your Planner.

SUPPLIES:  College ruled paper, your folder, or 3-ring binder, a red pen, 3 sharpened pencils.

REMEMBER, Math 7 is the basic foundation for the math on the CaHSEE.

I have listed the most common causes for poor performance in Middle School math.

Avoid these pit falls at all cost.

You miss a lot of school due to an illness. It is difficult to impossible to make up work if you miss a series of lessons. Math moves fast and each lesson builds on the one before. It is easy to loose track. If you even miss one day you will get behind UNLESS you come to me and make up your work.

Do not be absent, even for one day.

Or

You were too shy to raise your hand when you don’t understand. You have the right to understand every concept. The teacher won’t know you don’t understand unless you say something! In Miss Catalina’s, laughing at someone’s question is grounds for a parent conference. Making fun of someone is called intimidation. It is against the law and not tolerated. So, feel free to ask for clarity on any concept.

Do not laugh at anyone’s question or answer.

Or

You are working on Character Development. You have the opportunity to modify classroom behavior patterns to become a contributing member of our math community. Any behaviors that contribute to your loss of class time due to referrals, suspension, expulsion or worse, require immediate attention. You will be asked to observe ALL school rules, in class and at ALL times. Do not second guess this obligation.

Give yourself a chance, expect success, and you will achieve!

Quality behavior results in quality work.

Keep this syllabus in your notebook to remind yourself of our agreement.

My phone during school hours is (619) 591-4000.

Home (evenings) (619) 470-1116.

Thank you Very much,

Miss Catalina

Parents and Guardians: I have an open door policy. Feel free to stop by whenever you’d like! J
